The course will examine major themes such as the early Japanese traditions, China's influence, the Japanese adaptation of Chinese ideas and institutions, the changing nature of elite status, relations with outsiders, and Japanese religious and philosophical traditions. For History majors and minors, this is designated as a world history course.
