Appeals

Grade Appeals

Students wishing to appeal a letter grade (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D, F) must do so in writing to the chairperson of the department in which the course was offered within 60 school days following the end of the semester. Summer and Winter session months are not included in the 60 day appeal deadline. Students wishing to appeal a grade of WU or FIN to W, must submit an appeal to the Committee on Course and Standing (see below).

Upon receipt of the appeal, the chairperson shall direct the student to discuss the issue with the instructor who assigned the grade. If the issue remains unresolved, the student may request a review by the Department Committee on Grade Appeals.

This Department Committee on Grade Appeals shall review all information presented by the student and shall meet with the instructor. The committee shall render a decision within 30 days after the student requested the grade review by the committee because the student and instructor had not resolved the matter. If the committee upholds the appeal by a vote of 3-0, the chairperson shall change the grade to reflect the decision of the committee. If the committee does not uphold the student, there is no further appeal within the College.

In all deliberations on grade appeals, the burden shall be on the student to prove that a violation of the College’s regulations occurred or that the instructor’s own stated criteria for grading, which shall have been enunciated at the beginning of the semester, have not been followed. Students needing advice on the procedure may consult an academic and personal counselor.

To appeal a grade of WU or FIN to W, please refer to Course and Standing Appeals below.

Criteria for Readmission
In order to be readmitted after academic dismissal, the student must show evidence that they can raise their overall GPA to 2.0 within a reasonable number of credits. Documentation must be provided to show that the student has improved their academic performance. Such evidence may include attendance at another college or participation in a training program or other course of study. Evidence that a personal crisis or issue has been resolved. If a student has been out of school for an extended period of time (typically at least five years), they are not required to show proof of academic performance at another school. However, these students are still expected to provide appropriate documentation of their situation to support their request for readmission and any associated grade change requests.

Criteria for Grade Changes
To change a grade of FIN or WU to a grade of W the student must show that an extraordinary, documented circumstance prevented him/her from completing the coursework or formally withdrawing from the course.

Criteria for One Semester Extension on Remediation Dismissal
To receive a one semester extension on remediation the student must have completed appropriate interventions during his or her enrollment at the College. The student must have a reasonable expectation of completing the remediation requirements by the end of the next semester.
