Languages in Contrast: English and Chinese

Description

A systematic comparison of English and Chinese in various respects, e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax, information structure, and writing system. While the two languages differ from each other in many respects, which are the focus of this course, there are universals and general principles that hold true of both of them. The course is intended to cultivate students' ability to appreciate the differences between the two languages on the one hand and to seek the principles that apply to both English and Chinese on the other. (literature) NOTE: This course is taught in English and may not be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement. (literature)Prerequisites: ENG 151 and completion of one semester of foreign language or linguistic course or exemption from the Foreign Language requirement of General Education.
