Program Description
The AADS program offers a baccalaureate degree in African and African Diaspora Studies. Established in 1976, the program has an interdisciplinary curriculum that examines the histories, cultures, and experiences of the peoples of Africa and its diasporas through the study of history, literature, sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, and the arts.

AADS majors and minors gain an understanding of African history and culture; the history and legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade; the ideas and experiences of race in the United States and the world, and how they have changed over time; and the role of peoples of African descent in the development of the United States, other New World societies, and the worldwide struggle for racial justice and equality.

The program’s rigorous curriculum prepares graduates for careers and advanced study in the arts, business, education, civil service, health care, government, journalism, law, public advocacy, and more. The program’s philosophy is best expressed through its course offerings as well as its faculty research and publications.

Program Goals
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Become familiar with and capable of interpreting critically the primary and secondary sources that inform the African American Studies major, with the varying methodologies that are brought to bear in the study of this interdisciplinary major.

  • Articulate an issue/question that merits scholarly investigation, marshal the primary and secondary sources for such an investigation, and ultimately present the results in a cogently written essay that adheres to scholarly standards and expresses the interdisciplinary character of the Program.

  • Through an interdisciplinary perspective, have a comprehensive view of the interconnected relations of people of sub-Sahara Africa and its Diaspora.
