Program Description
The Spanish program prepares students to flourish in our diverse city and interconnected world. Students who have majored in Spanish have gone on to successful careers, and they have been accepted at top Schools and PhD programs. Language skills and cultural competence provide the leading edge in the job market and advance intellectual and personal growth.

Program Goals
Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • To read, write, speak, and understand Spanish effectively having acquired a minimum of Intermediate-Mid proficiency in Spanish, according to the ACTFL guidelines.

  • Be familiar with major works, genres, theoretical concepts, and historical periods in the broad spectrum of Spanish, Latin American, and US Latino cultural production.

  • Have command of the appropriate research tools and techniques for the critical analysis of Hispanic cultures, achieved through the study, in Spanish, of such topics as literature, linguistics, cinema, and the arts.

  • Critically discuss the intersections and divergences of Spanish, Latin American and Latino literatures and cultures with major linguistic, social, historical, cultural and political practices as a way to approach regional and global questions of power, knowledge and identity.
