Learning to "read" and write the news. Analysis of the role of news media in our understanding of society.
This course examines how news organizations affect politics, values, and social norms, as well as the economic pressures and technologies that shape how news is gathered, distributed, and consumed. It asks students to debate whether and to what extent contemporary news media fulfills its civic function of informing the citizenry and upholding the democratic system.
